The Center for Cardiometabolic Science is the oldest and largest center in the University of Louisville's Christina Lee Brown Envirome Institute, and the single greatest concentration of cardiovascular investigators at the University of Louisville School of Medicine.

Dr. Aruni Bhatnagar founded the center as the Diabetes and Obesity Center in 2008. Dr. Steven P. Jones, involved since its inception, assumed the directorship in 2019 and renamed it the Center for Cardiometabolic Science to reflect the breadth of its scientific mission: cardiac remodeling, metabolism, inflammation, physiologic adaptation, and the environmental drivers of cardiovascular disease.

We study physiological function across interconnected organ systems rather than one organ in isolation. Twelve faculty run independent laboratories here, supported by five shared cores that provide phenotyping, imaging, metabolic, and molecular capabilities to the center and to investigators across campus. The work informs therapeutic development, biomarker discovery, and disease modeling relevant to human health.
