I graduated from the University of Louisville's Center for Cardiometabolic Science with more than a degree. I left with mentors whose quiet investment in my growth became evident over years rather than days. Their guidance transformed the uncertainty of research into something worth pursuing, and the scientific standards they upheld continue to shape the way I think.

Train where discovery happens

The Center for Cardiometabolic Science houses the greatest concentration of cardiovascular researchers at the University of Louisville. Twelve faculty take PhD students. Five shared cores are down the hall, not across campus. And the people who train here leave with funding, publications, and somewhere to go.

We would rather show you than tell you.

Twelve of our last fourteen PhD students held an NIH and/or American Heart Association fellowship

Not a lab average. Not a projection. The individuals are named in our alumni section (below), with the fellowship each one held and where each one went.

Five themes. Pick the mentor, or pick the question.

Our faculty organize around five research themes. Each theme names the faculty who anchor it and the faculty who also work in this theme, so you can find the question first and the mentor second, or the mentor then the question. Most faculty fit under multiple themes, but don't worry because you will have ample guidance in the matching/selection process.
•  Cardiac remodeling & fibrosis:  How the heart rebuilds itself after injury, and why that rebuilding so often goes wrong.
•  Metabolism & bioenergetics:  How fuel use governs cardiovascular health, measured with stable isotopes and cellular energetics.
•  Inflammation:  How the immune response drives injury, and how it is meant to shut itself off.
•  Physiologic adaptation:  Exercise, pregnancy, and the biology of adaptive stress.
•  Environmental cardiology:  How pollutants, tobacco, and inhaled toxicants impact the cardiovascular system.

Cores you can actually use

Microscopy and Pathology. Physiology. Metabolic Profiling. Integrated Omics. Exposures and Toxicology. Led by scientists whose job is to help you get the experiment right, not to run it for you and hand back a number.

How to apply

Modern biomedical research is not discipline based. We have faculty from multiple disciplines, so, it is natural for us to have graduate students from multiple disciplines (i.e., Departments). Students from any School of Medicine PhD program (and the MD/PhD program) have the opportunity to join our laboratories.
